A Call for Community Solidarity with the Jena Six

The massive protests against the gross injustice being inflicted on the six Black youths, who have come to be know as the Jena Six, has captured the attention of the world and exposed in bold relief the ongoing reality of institutional racism and discrimination in the U.S. before the eyes of world public opinion.

The fight of the six, their families and thousands of supporters resonates widely because millions of working people and people of color are all too familiar -- through their own experience-- of the inequality and institutional discrimination of the U.S. "justice" system.

A mere glance at some the statistics reaffirms the reality that we already know. Black men are seven times more likely than whites to be imprisoned. Black people make up 41 percent of the prison population, but only 13 percent of the population. And the situation for Latinos and Native Americans is not much different.

What makes the Jena Six case different is that thousands of ordinary people from around the country have responded to this injustice with active solidarity. In addition to the thousands who marched in Jena there have been solidarity actions across the country. Last week 1500 people attended a protest at Howard University. And in Chicago, 500 people attended a protest meeting called by Rev. Al Sharpton. The meeting featured the mother of one of the Six Melissa Bell.

It's in this spirit of solidarity that the undersigned are issuing this emergency call for a meeting to organize a mass community protest meeting in solidarity with the Jena Six. We want to take up the call issued by the families of the six to demand :
Drop All Charges Now!

The meeting will take place
Thursday, September 27th 7:00pm at the Minneapolis Urban League 1313 Penn Avenue North in Minneapolis.
