Carnegie 05, 3:30-4:30
Lydia Lopez, the president of the Asoflores flower worker union in Bogota,
Colombia, will be speaking about violence in Colombia at Macalester on Monday,
November 12 in Carnegie 05 from 3:30 to 4:30. She will address gendered
violence in Colombia, union organizing, the struggle for international workers
justice, and the role of the United States in violence in Colombia. All are
welcome!
****David Kaplan on Mexican Labor Tribunals*
November 14th at 4:30pm in 4th Floor Old Main.
(A student luncheon, catered by Manny's Tortas, will be held Nov. 15th at 12pm
in the chemistry lounge off of the Smail Gallery in Olin Rice. )
Mr. Kaplan, of the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico and the World Bank,
is a labor economist whose recent areas of research include the effect of
business registration procedures on business start-ups, labor-market
rigidities, and empirical analyses of labor tribunals. At present he is
analyzing the effects of international trade on wages as well as the effects of
judges and public lawyers on outcomes in labor tribunals. He will be speaking
on his paper, "You won the case, but now what?: Costs of collecting awards and
their effect on lawsuit outcomes."
