The formation of the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU in 2004-2005 was the result of a long process, shaped both by administrative imperatives for downsizing, and faculty and student initiatives for collaboration among the six different programs collected under the new umbrella: Africana Studies, Asian Pacific American Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Metropolitan Studies, Latino Studies and American Studies. The intellectual rationale for the consortium approach has always been strong, though it continues to operate in tension with administrative and financial imperatives and the competing intellectual priorities of the corporate administration at NYU. This talk will trace the outline of these continuing tensions, and suggest strategies for strengthening the hand of ethnic studies and gender/sexuality programs involved in restructuring within the neoliberal university.

Sponsored by: Department of American Indian Studies, Department of African American and African Studies, Department of Chicano Studies, Program in Asian American Studies.
