I see why Rebol has to be commertial:
python, perl, tcl/tk, linux were initially developed by individuals
working at gov institutes/research centers (and were surviving on what
their job was paying them). The support extenstions to the languages are
also written by individuals (also surviving on what their job was
paying). The languages are open, so anyone can add, the good thing is
that there is that the languages have grown and there are numerous
extenstions etc. The downside is portability. Most modules work on
limited platforms.
Java... well Sun's doing good business in other fields- so it can afford
to put ppl on java.
Rebol, I think - is being developed by a group of ppl not doing anything
else (are they ?) So they have to get money from somewhere. The Rebol
core could (?) possibly have been commertial too. I think it's been made
free to get more ppl familiar with the language.
But I strongly feel there should be an 'open' version of Rebol which may
be distributed under a non-commercial license. Rebol ppl listening ?
