It's no accident that the latest development version of Perl lets you name your variables with any characters that are considered to be alphanumeric in Unicode. That includes ideographs. There are a billion people in China. And I want them to be able to pass notes to each other written in Perl. I want them to be able to write poetry in Perl. ... (Larry Wall, in the O'Reilly book "Open Sources") Though Unicode would bloat the code, this seems a very good reason to include it.
