People do manage to sell perl programs successfully. Take
www.ultimatebb.com for example.

Today, REBOL/Core is free. If you wrote the program today, you could
still always give today's REBOL/Core away for free. Nothing can change
that.

Also today, perl is free. Netscape Communicator is free. Java is free.
Linux is free. Real Producer and Basic Server are free. I can't imagine
what would change all that. (Martians landing? Returning our probe?)

Right now today, most people make a basic version free, and then charge
for an advanced version. This is what REBOL is doing with
REBOL/Command.

Truth is, there's easier ways for a crook to make money than to pirate
and repackage your code.

The real work isn't the code itself -- it's marketing, supporting, and
upgrading the package, which is too much bother for most thieves.

There is "shrinkage" in every business. Software is no exception. There
will always be plagarism and piracy, whether it's compiled or not. If
this bothers you, then ...

Hello to those in the REBOL world...

Lets say ( just for fun ) that I had spent 6 months tolling away with
REBOL,
and had produced a marvellous piece of software, that does everything.
Even
making a fine cup of coffee!

Let's then say, that I want to sell it for millions of N.Z Dollars ( No
open
sourcing here...)

How would I stop people from ripping into my code and pirating it as
their
own???

After all, REBOL is an easy to understand language. It's pretty open to
editing... A little bit of piracy would be easy... my retirement to the
Gold
Coast would then be threatened.

And... If I did happen to sell my Software (not saying that I
would)....
Would I have to sell to my customers, their own copy of rebol? Or do
they
buy their own copy?

Because I don't think REBOL will be free forever... will it? (<==--
Not
wanting to get into a debate over this issue)

Cheers...
