I know it's bad form to reply to my own post, but I figured there was more
that I could add that would clarify things.

In fact the *structure* of the cases *are* the same, as the block structure
of the stuff returned by Rebol's XML parser reflects. What's different is
the *content* in the structures.

Case 1:
== [document none [["doc" none ["^/  " ["childnode" none none] "^/"]]]]
Case 2:
== [document none [["doc" none [["childnode" none none]]]]]
