Hey Tim,
As Bob Barker and I always say, "if you like the sound, and the price is
right, then come on down, and you just might, win a decent prize". Ebay is
always a bit of a gamble. You have to remember... Nothing is better, or as
good as playing with, and trying out, a piece of equipment before you decide
to buy. Or buying something from someone you know. I purchased my TB-303
a few years ago through Ebay, and I took a huge gamble, buying something
from a stranger in another country that costs $1000+. And I purchased it as
a modified 303 as it was sold as such. The seller told me after the fact
that he knew very little about the modification on his 303, and proceeded to
tell me that it was modified by Robin Whittle and was a Devil Fish mod. ( I
knew this to be false at this point ). For the 303 geeks, the unit was
sold as having modified cv and gate as inputs (instead of, the standard
cv/gate outputs on the 303) In other words the jacks are converted to
inputs and therefore can be controlled via MIDI with any basic MIDI-cv/gate
interface box (of which an unheard-of Vesta Kaza interface box was thrown in
on the deal) I knew this wasn't a Devil Fish, from the beginning because I
researched the machines (303s) and its common modifications before I
purchased. (and asked Robin Whittle about it) I was very lucky in this
situation, because my 303 is in near mint condition, works flawlessly, has
no cosmetic damage, the cv and gate are "inputs", and it all works
absolutely perfectly. I can control all the notes+ on the 303 with a MIDI
synth, analog synth with cv/gate outputs, and my desktop computer. So yeah,
I got lucky, because I've heard of a lot of ripoffs, and bunk gear coming
through ebay, as a lot of the sellers are just brokers of many products. If
anyone is going to buy a "modified" electronic instrument, my advice is to
research that modification and its implications, as well as others before
you buy. And maybe learn something about the "electronics" of it all,
somewhere along the way..????

----Dave
