Hey jaybird, I agree %100, especially since I was able to
get Reason, Rebirth, Acid, Fruity Loops, Orion, Buzz, Soundforge,
Cakewalk, Cubase, 100s of VST instruments, etc., etc. for $0, and zero
effort. It's very easy to get these software programs, (but of course it
has to be legit if you're going to actually USE the
software professionally). But, I think it is defacing
dance music as well. The general public can not hear nor understand
the difference. The early acid techno artists were not necessarily
popular, but still well-known within the 'scene' (to quote a poor term).
In this case, what the general public does, really doesn't matter, whether they
listen to and buy shitty pop-music albums, or get daddy to buy some turntables,
or techno-making computer software to make their own crappy music...We know
this, and good techno producers know this. As a good
producer, you have to keep certain guidelines, to keep the music underground,
and constantly evolving there. Joe schmoe making decent tunes on
his computer is part of the general public. The reason I got into techno
was because I liked it and it had an "underground" feeling.
Not a lot of people knew about it. It wasn't populerly accepted. It
actually "felt" good. You hear computers, but you 'feel'
instruments. When possible, analog live is always the way to go. I
use my software primarily for shits and giggles, I'm not serious about it, like
most everything that shows up on my computer screen.....
Jaybird, I am not worried about the face of techno music being
devalued, REAL techno music always lives underground, and only people who are
serious enough to look for it, will actually find the real thing. I say
forget about everyone else, let them make their digital
software-generated tracks, it'll keep the
masses occupied.
