Hey Mark (vspirit),
I agree with you 100%. But however, there's a very large number of creative thinkers out there who would love to have an original 303, but are pissed at the fact that it costs $600-$1000 for a working unit, and they can't afford it, and will have to settle for an MC-303 groovebox or worse, for monetary reasons alone. I think that there is some merit in what some of these guys are doing, and asking money for these mods ... Because it is PROFESSIONALLY done. I would be happy to send mine to Robin if only I could afford it. Unfortunately I spent enough of my extra cash years ago buying a TB-303 on ebay from someone in another country, (yes it happened to be Australia), just so I could have an original 303 in the first place. I still agree with you that the information should be shared. And a disclaimer be added "fuck up your 303 by following my directions". The information DOES exist, yes on the INTERNET. But nobody trusts it when it's free because it doesn't appear to be professional information when it's free. My suggestion is this. Whenever any die-hard 303 fan wants to modify his/her 303 themselves, or have it done PROFESSIONALLY, they should do a little research, by first gaining some "basic electronics education." We can learn a lot about quantum physics and rocket science on the internet, but can any of us do it?? Sure, but only those of us who spend enough time learning it, and then spend a lot more time perfecting it. And some professional schooling may be required, and even that may cost money.
Mark I still agree with you, but encourage you to learn a little bit about the 303's electronics,(it's not as complicated as one might think, from an electronics standpoint). The 303's schematics are available everywhere on the internet for FREE. And that's where all these guys started. You could develop your own 303 mod, and share it with everyone. But there comes a point where you spend so much of your time and energy perfecting something, that at the end of the day you still need to eat. And if that isn't the case, then you're an electronic engineer, or a genius, at which point you deserve the money for what you've created. And if was all free then the artistic integrity would be lost. If everyone could do it, it wouldn't be quite as much fun. In fact it might be boring.
How does Angus Young of AC/DC get his guitar sound ?? Well, many times he has explained exactly how he does it. But if anyone can exactly replicate it, then I will bow before them....(go figure) Good Luck dude...
Best Regards,
