The TUI offers many advantages over the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI), including strong physical and cognitive affordances, support for two-handed interaction, and ease of collocated collaboration. However, like other interaction models, the TUI suffers the limitation that it is not nearly as mouth-wateringly delicious as many of the objects that we interact with on a daily basis. In this talk, I will introduce the new paradigm of Edible User Interfaces (EUI), which addresses this inadequacy. I will demonstrate two EUI systems, BeanCounter and TasteScreen, and describe some applications of each system. BIO: Dan Maynes-Aminzade is a Ph.D candidate working under the supervision of Professor Terry Winograd at Stanford University. He received his M.S. in Media Arts & Sciences from the MIT Media Lab, and his B.S. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. He has also spent time in internships at Walt Disney Imagineering, Adobe Systems, Microsoft, MERL, FXPAL, and Google. His research interests are in Human-Computer Interaction, specifically in tangible and augmented reality interfaces that incorporate new channels of input and output.
