Como ya se ha mencionado, hay un artículo muy completo (en inglés) sobre las
ventajas/desventajas de los menús a la derecha, A Comparison Between Left- and
Right-justified Site Navigation
Menus. Me han llamado la atención especialmente las secciones 5.4 y 5.5. Valgan
dos citas de ambas secciones, respectivamente:
(...) A drawback to a right-justified navigation menu, however, is the
interaction
with the browser's back button. The back button is located in the upper
left corner of most browsers. Obviously, this function would be closer
to a left-justified navigation than to a right-justified navigation. A
right-justified navigation, then, increases the distance and subsequently
the interaction time between the navigation menu and the back button.
Consequently,
when implementing a page layout with a right-justified navigation, it is
essential to include linking mechanisms that avoid user reliance on the
browser's back button. This can include history back links or a clickable
path of the user's location within the site's information structure, commonly
referred to as a "breadcrumb trail".
(...) If users prefer a scroll
wheel to the browser's scrollbar, for instance, the benefit of locating
a right-hand navigation near the scrollbar may not be significant.
Todo siempre es muy dependiente del contexto de uso, la persona que lo utilice
(y sus circunstancias), el tipo de página (¿prima la lectura o la navegación?),
etc. De cualquier modo y tras mucho leer, me parece bien un menú a la derecha
si se quiere transmitir "innovación-rebeldía-originalidad-llámaloX" en el site
o si existe mucho contenido en cada página (un blog, por ejemplo). Sin embargo,
las dos ideas transmitidas en las citas anteriores (más allá de que el menú a
la izquierda es efectivamente el estándar) creo que son más importantes que las
ventajas de situar el menú a la derecha.
