Have you tried going from your admin panel to Settings-->Message acceptance-->Accept these non-members (and then add the person's email address and save)?
In the next few days I'll be going through the settings for the lists I administer, because I think a few of them need to be tweaked. We're also looking at member "nicknames" because some of our subscribers have "nicknames" that aren't appropriate for other lists.
