You could put something like:

<a class="pdfDownload" href="downloads/G15.pdf" title="To Save, right click and select 'Save target...">Download PDF [156Kb]</a>

in the table cell and then use CSS Image Replacement to stick your icon there :o)

If you can serve it as XML, then you can use MathML [1], but if you
need IE support, your way is probably the best way.
