The most the supid downside to mailing lists? Just go the archives and browse: you'll notice that simple questions get the same answer ten times per thread just because of the delay between reading, responding, and seeing the rest of the responses coming back to your box. Mailing lists are slow and redundant and if you come to think of it, mailing lists archives are forums in which you can't answer or post, so why have a useless forum and a mailing lag.. err.. list? That I can tell you in one word: Tradition!
