In my opinion; the appropriate thing to do is throw a 300 level moved permanently error. Now whether you redirect immediately or inform your users as to the nature of the redirection is a matter of usability preference. I think we're moving off the subject of web standards (or, perhaps not as appropriate http codes are part of a standard). If you would like to discuss it, contact me off list.
