I just want to say that I really strongly dislike links that open in a new window, other than to deliberately confuse the average user I can see no good reason for making them. BTW, I'm talking about things like offsite links and adds that spawn new windows, not popups for image enlargements and such, however I believe that they should be avoided as much as possible also.

To add my 2¢ ...

I say that I think well designed and executed popups are a great enhancement to the user experience … there is nothing I hate more than losing my pathway because I wanted to check out some ancilliary information on a site. As always, it comes down to the way something is executed, and as such I think it is prhaps premature to write off functionality so generally.

With good design, good use of standards, popups can be terrific.

Peter

If you don't force the link to open in a new window a user has the ability to choose to open the link in a new window or tab. Also if they open it in the same window they wont loose their back buttons functionality. The number of times I have seen the average user confused by a new window, thinking that there is something wrong with their browser because their back button isn't working.
