You should test it with 'minimum font size' in all browsers that have
such a user option, and IE/win's 'ignore font size'. You'll notice that
your "small text" method to hide original button-text doesn't work at all.
Also if anyone here is familiar with fixing stuff in Opera - I know
that there are a couple of layout issues in Opera with the search
form and navigation div and would appreciate any guidance there.

Opera 9beta presents it like Firefox 1.5.0.3.
My Opera 8.5 is set to not allow your customized buttons to display.
That either leaves me with an unreadable button-text, or a text-size
that rely on my own 'minimum font size' setting which makes "search" too
large for its button. Something wrong with your approach here, I think.
