Sorry to sound anarchic, but sometimes you just have to step back and
ask: "why am I doing all this when there is a simple ( and robust) way?"
In this case, you must wrestle with your own conscience as to whether
this justifies a hybrid approach (see [1]) which validates and works
fine in FF, IE. NO hacks and dead simple!
