A client who is clinging to the web of yore, is still insisting on tables being used for layout. It is the misconception tables provide greater browser compatibility, the client supports IE 5.X for MAC OS.

Wishing to bridge a gap of understanding through education, could someone provide examples of standards based retro-fitted table design? It is hoped seeing clean semantic code and CSS used with low- bandwidth tables, will inspire greater confidence in CSS being used solely for positioning and styling.

I'm not exactly sure what it is you are asking. A simple layout table, styled with CSS can be as accessible as a CSS-positioned layout, save for mobile devices using browsers that cannot automatically linearize a table. But if you have to debate at that level with a client, then there is a problem. Perhaps if you can restate the question with some additional detail, more detailed responses could be made.
