Hey I listen to WSG, but my job is a IT Tech/Maintence guy for a school, were we run 300+ Macs.
The firmware issue is a problem with anything X really, the firmware of the machine needs to be updated otherwise the logic/video board can/will fail. It's a simple process, simply need a OS9 installation to update it. On OS9 there are two other options, Mozilla as people mentioned and also iCab. I know some people who won't switch to X simply because the programs won't run on X or because there stuck in the dark ages, and are too lazy to move. Running Classic isn't an option for a professional resource program, so it's not always a viable alternative. Mac IE is dead, I don't include it on any computers any more. Safari and in the next few months Camino will be the way forward. We run Panther on 350Mhz machines with very little memory with no problem at all. Some people just need to move forward. Yes, we are very off-topic. If anyone would like to continue you can e-mail me off list. I've upgraded many Macs in my time (it's part of my job) and I've never heard of this firmware issue before - have you actually tried it? You'll find that upgrading that 400MHz G3 to Panther or better will significantly improve performance. My daughter's iMac (350) runs 10.3.9 quite happily, and it's a known fact that every revision of OS X up to Panther ran faster on the same hardware. Perhaps replies should come directly to me, as we're a wee bit off topic right now :-) -- Kevin Futter Webmaster, St. Bernard's College http://www.sbc.melb.catholic.edu.au/ ------------------------------------------ This e-mail and any attachments may be confidential.
