Although it's not as fashionable today, providing a more washed out (used) looking link for the visited state can greately assisit visitors (good usability) when navigating about your site (history of where they have been etc.). But it depends upon many factors. For example, search results is an excellent place to show visited links (i.e. google), whereas a navigational bar may be less appropriate.

I must confess, my use of the word "lazy" was just laziness on my part because I couldn't be bothered to write out all of what you just said :)
