I don't like it either, but if you want IE6 to behave like it can handle
'min *and* max width', then there are not all that many solutions -
'IE-expression' or regular Javascript.

Don't know when you picked up that "full-blown" solution, but a few more
options - also 'expression-based' - are added to this page...

I prefer the "full-blown" solution myself.

Of course an 'IE-expression' is non-valid CSS, so if that's the
border-line you don't want to cross, then 'IE-expression' is not an
option without 'conditional comments' or other hiding-methods.

Just simulating 'min width' is another matter, as it isn't difficult to
prevent IE/win from collapsing.
