Rahul,
As it was said before (I don't remember if it was in this list),
although Virtual PC is free now, OSs for it aren't. Besides RAM you also
need quite a lot of disk space, if you want to have several versions of
IE working as they should, each in his own Virtual PC instance. Please
correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Roberto,
Yes, all those caveats do apply. You do need about 1.9 GB for an
installation of Windows XP or about 1.4GB for 2000, and you do need to
spend some time setting up multiple copies of IE, as well as the other
browsers that you test on Windows.
However, this setup works well for me, as more importantly than anything
else, it provides a "sand-boxed" mode, for me to run Windows, and do all
the registry hacking required to run IE 7, IE 6 and IE 5.5 (I don't
usually check in 5.0/5.01 unless expressly asked to do so). It can share
the network connection, and so I don't have to have any of my files on
the test "machine" - so I feel very safe that nothing that happens on
the virtual machine can affect my main one. When I am done testing, I
just "turn off" the virtual machine, and don't commit any changes to
disk - this ensures that I have a brand-new system, free of
spyware/virii/what have you, every time I start it up.
It helps that I had an old laptop with Windows 2000 on it, which I now
use to test Linux, so I think I've side-stepped any legal/ethical issues
regarding not purchasing a brand-new copy of Win2000.
As always, your mileage may vary. I'd say the ideal situation for using
VPC is if you have a second copy of the Windows version that you want,
have plenty of RAM, and a decent amount of diskspace. The peace of mind
alone from this kind of setup does, for me anyway, outweigh the costs.
Regards,
- Rahul.
