Naturally it works fine in FF, Camino et al).
I realize that this is probably something that has already been solved, but
I can't find a reference to it. Any help greatly appreciated.
I am seeing the problem you describe in IE7 Beta 3, however this
really should be testing using RC1. If the problem does exist in RC1
or IE6 (although Kepler says it's fine) then in your CSS you could
target IE and apply: display:inline-block; which might fix the
rendering. IE is doing something funny with the inline display style
it seems, particularly when line wrapping is involved.
But again, test in IE6 and IE7 RC1, don't bother with Beta 3 as some
rendering issues have been fixed. (I really shouldn't still have it
installed on this PC at all!) :P
