Those are good suggestions Paul. I often use the off-page method [1], but 
recently I discovered an additional method that I sort of came up with by 
accident: My hover/focus image is the same as my on-page image (to flag the 
link of the page you're on) thus it is preloaded on the page ahead of time 
automatically without any additional mark-up [2 working example]. The latter 
won't work in all cases, but the way it's done on the example site really 
works out well.
