This is a one-way list for WSG Announcements
**************************************************************
Hi everyone,
Following the WSG Core Summit held at Red Square in Sydney on 30 September
2006, we have implemented some changes to the WSG system. Let me start by
again thanking our Core Team for their help.
-----
1. This "Announce" list now goes to your "List Email" address rather than
your "Login Email" (unless you've changed it manually they are the same).
This is due to you not having the ability (apart from unsubscribing and
resubscribing) to alter that address and many of you have changed addresses
due to changing your job/ISP etc.
Notifications about changes to your details and "forgot password" requests
will still be sent to your "login email" address, so if you need to have
your "login email" changed, please let me know by emailing
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will change it manually for you.
-----
2. For a few years now, some members have been asking for a WSG Forum and in
past discussions we have decided not to do this. It's finally about to
happen. We are currently finalising the system and it will be launched next
Friday (December 1 2006). It will not be linked to your WSG membership so
you will have to join the forum separately if you wish to use it. This will
not replace the list but it may give some latitude for wider topics (what we
would deem OT on the list). More details to follow when it launches and the
guidelines are finalised.
-----
3. There is now a "Remember me" option on the login so that you don't have
to log in each time from your own machine. Obviously don't check this on a
public computer. If you want to clear it, use the "Logout" link in the
members section. This will help you with the meeting RSVPs and comments
mentioned below.
-----
4. For the cities with meeting groups, there are now specific pages listing
meetings and events (future and past) in your city and a city-based RSS feed
(the default is all events and an RSS feed showing all).
On past meetings, any available podcasts and resources will be shown and
there is now a blog-like comment field (only available to post if you are
logged in) for you to discuss the event. We will be cleaning up the content
of the old events over the coming month as they have remained hidden up
until now.
-----
5. From January 1 2007, you will RSVP for meetings on the meeting notice
page itself. As you will be required to log in to RSVP, the basic values in
the form will be pre-populated so it should be very quick easy (and the
formbots won't spam us). This gives us one central place to know who will be
attending a meeting and allow us to cater accordingly.
This will also _encourage_ non-members that attend our meetings to join WSG
(they don't have to be on the main WSG mail list which is their main
objection, just getting the low-traffic Announce and, if they desire,
City-Announce lists).
As a result of these changes, we are shutting down the RSVP email addresses
in the coming weeks (after the current events have passed) as they are
spam-laden due to being published on the meeting notices (e.g.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]).
-----
6. As we have noted previously, so that we can offer better information to
meeting groups without bugging members elsewhere, meetings will be announced
via city-based "Announce lists" (with a mention in "Links for Light Reading"
as well).
If you are in or near one of the cities listed below, I strongly suggest you
log in and add the appropriate announce list to your WSG subscriptions.
While they will be low-traffic lists, they will keep you informed of not
only WSG events, but other relevant events in your city.
* Some of these cities have not had a meeting yet but plans are in place for
events in the new year.
Adelaide Australia *
Brisbane Australia
Canberra Australia
Hobart Australia *
Melbourne Australia
Perth Australia
Sydney Australia
East-Yorkshire England *
London England
Auckland New Zealand
Wellington New Zealand
Moscow Russia *
Cities that have been using manual local mailing lists will cease to do so
soon, so to be informed about events it is important to subscribe to these
lists.
We have had a few enquiries about new meeting groups but haven't had much
success with enough people being interested. So as always, the offer is
there for us to contact people in your area on your behalf to see if they
are interested in getting together. Please contact
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and please let us know the details of the
location and surrounding area as we are probably not at all familiar with
your area. You can check for the numbers of around you in the members
section of the website.
-----
7. Finally, with the silly-season fast approaching, a further reminder to
take yourself off the WSG and CMS lists (and digests) if you are setting a
vacation message on your email account. Depending on how your mail server
handles them, they can come back to the list, to the actual sender or to me
the list owner. In any of these cases it's a bit rude as we really don't
care if you're there or not so please keep it in mind.
That's all for now. If you read this far, Thanks!
