Looking at the thread above, I see people asking for;

  1. Compliant CMS
  2. Search-engine friendly
We've been developing an open-source CMS that amoung other things, is;
  1. Compliant (the templates can be as compliant as you can make them; www.silverstripe.com is compliant xhtml 1.1, css). The actual CMS administration panel works has been designed to follow standards as much as possible, thus works fine in FireFox, IE6/7 etc.
  2. Free, opensource and easily installed, given it requires just Apache/PHP/MySQL. Our site has a windows installer for those inclined, too.
  3. By virtue of #1, you will be able to make your website easily found in Google.
  4. I think one of biggest virtues, and this hasn't been mentioned in this thread, is its ease of use in making sites, and in using the system to manage the website when finished. I suggest visiting http://demo.silverstripe.com to use the CMS. Realise we've split apart the interface that content authors use versus what website developers use. This means you don't get hard to use admnistration panels that try to achieve everything in one interface, which confuses your hapless client! (think of Drupal/Typo3!)
Finally, there's a group of 15 people to respond any questions you may have; whether it be how to start, or how to write a new extension to the system.

I have been working with a few different and very good CMS systems for quite a while.
 
There's one that I would recommend for "large" websites that also require a lot of functionality, a lot of specific control, numerous different users with different rights, accessibility validation, etc., etc.  I liked it so much that I actually re-sell their product and help with the installation and support of the app.  But .. this particular product may be larger than what you want or need.  The cost starts around $4,995, and goes up simply based upon the number of users you need to have.
 
But there are other systems that cost as little as $100 to $300 (and there are also very good).  But they are just not in the same league as the other.
 
Typically you can search the Internet for CMS systems based upon your server requirements.  There are also some that are hosted so you won't even need to be concerned with server requirements, etc.
