Tell me about it. Well, here's the rule. There are only five *named* entities you can use in XML: & < > " ' if you've got anything else that's non-numeric, it's going to cause an error. So, where are these other entities coming from? One valid but unhelpful answer is "you haven't really got XML", because if it's not well-formed and, if applicable, valid, you've just got another kind of tag soup.
