In theory, that's a possibility, but in reality, it's not. Apple, Mozilla and Opera have already decided that they will be supporting HTML5 and have already begun implementing many of its features. The chances of IE deciding to support XHTML 2.0 instead are extremely slim. In fact, there's more chance of IE refusing to implement either, but then pressure from web developers would eventually get to them and they'd be forced to implement HTML5 anyway.
