consistent with the conclusion I had come to after thinking about the
spec.

This interpretation is also consistant with the Unix philosophy of
using small independent tools cooperating together (and with the
operating system) without arbitrary restrictions, rather than the
philosophy of using specialized tools for every new task. In other
words, if there were some reason to name maildir files in a different
manner, and this naming scheme didn't interfere with the original
considerations (i.e., avoiding filename collisions by independent
processes), and you still wanted to use them with maildir-compliant
tools, there would be no reason to restrict it. This seems to be in
keeping with Dan Berstein's general point of view.
