I have been running bincimap and Courier IMAP in parallel and have observed that binc is noticeably faster than Courier. So I decided to time the two downloading 524 messages and a total of 2084KB of data:
bincIMAP: 30 seconds + <1 second to authenticate
Courier: 100 seconds + 5 seconds to authenticate
