I’d look at on the basis:

After deducting the cost of travel from the pay for travel, does the remainder
provide an amount that provides a reasonable cover for the time.

Considering that, from that ‘Time’ you should deduct what it would have taken
to travel to an appropriate place of employment for what you do, and your
employer’s business premises.

I used to do a 75 mile journey each way, each day to the ‘office’ where I was
employed to do my work.

That was unpaid, and for some of the time was the other side of London from
where I lived – so add in another 30 miles for going round London.

Being paid £20 per hour for 1 way travel can still be considered £10 an hour for
the out and return journey.

However, the hourly rate while I was at the ‘office’ meant that I was still
getting a reasonable income for the hours taken from/to home.

Most of the alternatives involved working in central London – maybe only 12
miles away from home – but that would incur parking @ £30 a day, and a 1 hour
drive each way, or 90 minutes on public transport – both of which would not have
been covered by any time, or cost compensation.

Then again getting paid @ £100 an hour for 3 hour’s presence and 8 hours travel
counts as £300 for an 11 hour day.

Then again getting paid @ £40 an hour for 7 hour’s presence (1 hour assumed to
be Lunch and other breaks) and 3 hours travel counts as £280 for an 11 hour day.

First seems better, until you factor in actual transport costs, and
convenience/comfort/hassle – then who knows?

So – regardless of what the ‘(re)imbursement rates and conditions – the
important consideration is surely

Can you do much better as an overall package?

As I said “where it isn’t an issue”. J

But I’d get paid both ways.

Remote work is hardly an option with this account, as this is mainly
backbone/core work where hardware (core switches/firewalls etc..) needs to be
replaced & or reconfigured.

No, not normal/typical, however this is spelled out in my contract/work-order
with client.

“Butt from seat, butt back to seat” is what I charge. If a client asks, I’ll
negotiate travel time to be as low as 50%, but I’ll get paid both ways. Usually,
clients don’t ask. If you aren’t working, and you are driving, you have a lost
opportunity cost. That doesn’t work for me.

That being said, as many of my clients on this list know, I prefer to work
remotely where it isn’t an issue. J That does require a strong degree of trust.

Hi all,

This is totally off topic (TOT) for MS, but I'm sure many can relate/respond;

I just started doing contractor work for a new provider, and I've just realized
that for travel time they only pay travel time TO THE SITE, not my return trip
and the travel rate is 50% of the hourly rate.
Every trip thus far has been at least 50 miles EACH WAY, (100+ miles round
trip),just the other day I had a 180 mile day.

I'm just wondering, does this sound normal/typical, or does this strike anyone
as "odd"?

Any comments/feedback would be appreciated
