Id look at on the basis:
After deducting the cost of travel from the pay for travel, does the remainder provide an amount that provides a reasonable cover for the time. Considering that, from that Time you should deduct what it would have taken to travel to an appropriate place of employment for what you do, and your employers business premises. I used to do a 75 mile journey each way, each day to the office where I was employed to do my work. That was unpaid, and for some of the time was the other side of London from where I lived so add in another 30 miles for going round London. Being paid £20 per hour for 1 way travel can still be considered £10 an hour for the out and return journey. However, the hourly rate while I was at the office meant that I was still getting a reasonable income for the hours taken from/to home. Most of the alternatives involved working in central London maybe only 12 miles away from home but that would incur parking @ £30 a day, and a 1 hour drive each way, or 90 minutes on public transport both of which would not have been covered by any time, or cost compensation. Then again getting paid @ £100 an hour for 3 hours presence and 8 hours travel counts as £300 for an 11 hour day. Then again getting paid @ £40 an hour for 7 hours presence (1 hour assumed to be Lunch and other breaks) and 3 hours travel counts as £280 for an 11 hour day. First seems better, until you factor in actual transport costs, and convenience/comfort/hassle then who knows? So regardless of what the (re)imbursement rates and conditions the important consideration is surely Can you do much better as an overall package? Butt from seat, butt back to seat is what I charge. If a client asks, Ill negotiate travel time to be as low as 50%, but Ill get paid both ways. Usually, clients dont ask. If you arent working, and you are driving, you have a lost opportunity cost. That doesnt work for me. That being said, as many of my clients on this list know, I prefer to work remotely where it isnt an issue. J That does require a strong degree of trust. Every trip thus far has been at least 50 miles EACH WAY, (100+ miles round trip),just the other day I had a 180 mile day. I'm just wondering, does this sound normal/typical, or does this strike anyone as "odd"? Any comments/feedback would be appreciated
