Ahh yes that was it, my thinking was the wrong way around! – I couldn’t quite remember the scenario that people have previously posted re: memory and WSUS app pool.

By default, the amount of RAM the WSUS application pool is allowed to use is already too limited in many cases. If it runs out of memory, the application pool will crash and your SUP/WSUS server will be broken until you restart the service – it will not restart on its own. You need to set the application pool for WSUS to be high enough that it doesn’t crash. If you are limited by the amount of RAM you have in the WSUS (or SUP) then you need to get more RAM or find a different server to support WSUS that has more RAM. You could try to clean up your WSUS database via maintenance. It might reduce the amount of memory that WSUS application pool needs. If you lower the amount of memory the pool is allowed to use, you will just start having WSUS crash instead of the process using up your memory. It sounds like your server is not suited to be a SUP for your site. For reference, mine pool regularly uses > 4GB of memory. (~19,000 clients) Assuming you want to ignore this advice and try to limit the WSUS pool’s memory, you do that in IIS Management. I mean it can’t hurt to try, right? Just keep an eye out on the WSUS server so you know when it stops working. In IIS manager… Find “Application pools” in the left frame -> WsusPool in the middle frame -> click Advanced Settings… in the right frame Scroll down to the “Recycling” section of Advanced Settings and set the “Private Memory Limit (KB) to something larger or smaller (in your case). Restart IIS. Good luck. I think if you try to use less memory, you are going to have WSUS crash. Most people looking for this information are wanting to increase the application pool memory for Wsus because it is crashing.
