Yup, this bit me in the rear at my last client.

I bricked 2 sp3's before realizing....

In my case, it was an instant brick.

Subject: [mssms] Custom OS Image on Surface Pro 3 might cause SSD failure

Background:

· The problem only occurs on custom-imaged Surface Pro 3 devices, which
means it does *not* impact the pre-installed OS, recovery image, or the
MCS-created enterprise images we provide.

· The root cause of failing SSDs is an incorrect storage driver.

· If a device is not already dead, a KB article is published to correct
the issue. (See below)

· If a device is dead, or dies before applying the fix - the only
resolution is a full device replacement. In this instance all data is
unrecoverable.

· Impacted customers will need to update their custom image to prevent
the issue from reoccurring.

How to Identify and Replace Incorrect Driver:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3030044

The SP3 Firmware Installer MSI package is updated to DETECT & CORRECT the issue
on running systems.
