It's definitely a load that would need to be repopulated... ~150gb that's the reason I was considering in place... since I don't immediately need it, I guess I could turn down the transfer rate or maybe QOS it or set it to prestage and transfer it via other method

If you can easily redistribute all needed content, I would deploy a fresh install of Windows 2012 R2. I'm not a huge fan of in-place upgrades, unless absolutely necessary. One thought to consider, since these are VMs, would be to deploy a new Windows 2012 R2 server in each location and provision it as a DP, and when all the content is available, just retire the old DPs. You would have multiple DPs in each location for a short time, but it might be less impactful. They are simply branch cache enabled sccm 2012 r2 sp1 with the only role being dp, no PXE or multicast, and they are hyper-v guests. Would you consider an in-place upgrade to 2012 r2?
