The second VMware cluster is for DR only.
I don't see that the replication itself is the problem we are having.  The 
problem seems to be the taking of the sync'd   snapshot...

Yes, however, we don't have live VMware clusters at both ends (I
presume you mean a stretched clustrer?). In my case, our SAN
replication is via EMC RecoverPoint (and I do have a couple VMs that
are SQL servers, but I believe they are for local apps - i.e., not
servicing other clients), but my other VMware site is for D/R, so we
use Site Recovery Manager (SRM),. And as such, only 1 site is hot at a
time. So there are no other clients accessing the SQL DBs from the
other site.
