What about the charging profile? What chargers work well with Hawkers?
I have 13ah Hawkers in my F3. I use Soniel low amperage on mine but I know from reading the EVDL and Hawker sales lit they like higher amps than the Soniels can provide. I think the answer is to bite the bullet and pay for a Rudman PFC.
Can you send along the measurements so I can do some rough space planning? Do you believe that because they are smaller that a more creative configuration is possible?
Measurements shouldn't be hard to find for the specific battery you're interested in. Once you find them, use card-board or stryofoam to make some mockups. This will let you fiddle with configurations all day without hurting yourself. :)

If you are able to get some higher voltages that would seem to improve range, but I have always been under the impression that more amps equals better acceleration (which is my goal). If I were to go up, I would probably just go to 96 volts as a first step and see what the actual results are like first.
