Hi Mike,
I've been looking over the pictures of your project and have a few questions.
What was the source for your glider? Can you tell us a bit about the
bike's history and how you found the chassis to convert?
I choose the CBR because I had a lot of spare Honda parts laying
around from when I used to race a Hawk. Many Hawk and CBR parts are
interchangeable. I bought a frame off eBay and got royally screwed
on that one. http://reish.net/ebay/basheer_shabazz/
Then I found another one that was darned near perfect.
Did you sell/recycle any of the ICE parts that you removed? EBay?
Nope. Came stripped down. I do have another CBR, however, that
might get converted and it has all the ICE junk still attached. I
hope to eBay all that junk. Other parts came from the supply pile.
The bodywork doesn't appear to be stock (although I am not familiar
with the 600cc Honda)?
Aftermarket. Sharkskinz to be exact. OEM plastic is VERY expensive
even used. You can find new fiberglass for a lot less and you can
find used fiberglass for a lot, lot, lot less still.
I really enjoyed the sub frame and battery block testing shots. Was
the sub frame built in aluminum and did you do your own welding?
I learned to MIG on that. It's all 1/2" square tube. Well, the new
one is. The old one was a hodgepodge of 1" and 1/2". Version 3 is
being designed around some aluminum honeycomb composite stuff I found.
What was the source for and type of foam that you used to create
your trial battery blocks?
Home Depot, Lowes, Menards. Just standard white styrofoam. I made
some new ones for the Yellow Tops a few weeks back. This time around
I used regular contact cement and am very pleased with how it went.
I made a quick and dirty hot wire cutter that was most helpful.
Lemme know if you want more info!
Mike
