GRIDLEY MAN CONVERTS HARLEY TO ELECTRIC by Tim Gilmour
Staff Reporter John Neiswanger of Gridley has converted a 1958 Harley Davidson into an electric motorcycle. As an electric contractor at Industrial Electronics in Marysville, Neiswanger has electric forklifts, boom lifts, golf carts and more. Having the bike sitting around for about 15 years, he wanted to convert it. Basically, I figured why don't I try this motorcycle and see if I can make it go, he said. And if it works close to what I think it will, then my next project is a car. Well, the motorcycle does run and Neiswanger has gotten to work on converting a car, which won't be done for a while. When the Harley was new it would get up to 40, 45 miles per hour and after the conversion it still gets up to about 35. The conversion process isn't too complicated, he said. It basically involves taking out the parts of an internal combustion engine and putting in a battery. Neiswanger used past experience, books and information online to figure out how to do it. It took about eight months to complete, excluding the time he had to wait for parts. He likes that the bike is now quieter, simpler and it no longer leaks oil. What I told Rotary a couple weeks ago was I just did it to reinforce my oddball reputation, he said. --- lyle sloan wrote: > An EVDL member has gotten in the news for his Harley > Servicar conversion. > http://www.gridleyherald.com/articles/2006/12/01/news/news04.txt > > His cycle is this one: > http://www.evalbum.com/751 > http://www.indele.com/page6.html > > > > ____________________________________________________________________________________ > Want to start your own business? > Learn how on Yahoo!
