Mike, I don't know how well this applies to your bike, but with my little scooter the chain was consuming a lot of power until I loosened it up enough to always have slack. This works okay because it has a freewheeling device. After that was done it went a couple mph faster and accelerated better.
I also added citrus chain wax made my schwinn (don't think you can get it anymore). This is amazing stuff, quieting the chain and further reducing losses. So... any possible way to add a freewheeling device to a motorcycle, and anyone know any good chain wax that dries enough to not attract dirt? Regards, Andrew
