If you go the alternator route, you might want to get intouch with an alternator rebuild outfit, maybe they can rewind the stator to output the correct ac voltage which can be rectified for the 85V. I would make sure I had something to regulate that charge voltage.
Not for nothing, IF the engine to genset was the way to go, don't you think the car companies would have gone in that direction with their hybrid designs? In the case of trains they do the diesel gen to motor idea, not battery but they have motors in each wheel of the locomotive. Great torque. For EMCs hub motors kind of on the weak side.
