Nilar announces temporary allocation - Q1 2008
Due to overwhelming demand, Nilar is forced to announce a temporary freeze on new orders, and allocation for existing customers

I don't see any pricing, but they don't look cheap! But they do look nice. And if one believes press releases then one can interpret this as they are actually shipping product (or they have problems and can't meet spec).

You can inquire of NILAR in Centennial, CO if they are any closer to
production NiMH cells, these were rectangular cells with flat anodes
and cathodes. I was hoping they would see the EV market a likely
candidate for their products. Light weight, high number of charge
cycles, and good battery chemistry (Lithium Ion not so great for
environment and safety). Cost in line with Lithium Ion.

Large format lithium cells are getting easier to find, and the prices are
not that bad especially for a motorcycle size pack. One important thing to
keep in mind is that the pack has to be able to source enough current. If
an individual cell cannot, it will need to be paralleled with other cell(s)
in order to do so. Small cells cannot source enough current, whether
lithium or NIMH so must be paralleled.

Here are a couple of sources for large format lithium iron phosphate cells.
For about $4000 I could build a pack for my motorcycle that would give me
good performance a solid 40 mile range. If I wasn't so focused on my truck,
I might be tempted.

I had been thinking between lithium and lead as well. It seems most of
the lithiums are small cells and require a BMS. So it seemed NiMH
wouldn't be too much worse (and maybe better) in comparison. I presume
NiMH falls in between lithium and lead in weight. I don't need a huge
battery pack (so I think) and the NiMH didn't look to crazy. But there
must be reasons it's not being used. I figured I'd need 150 cells and if
they have to managed individually that is a problem.

Just thinking out loud.

NIMHs are totally off my radar, because as you said, the right size
cells are unobtainable. They are also tough to charge correctly
especially when you have to parallel them all together to get the
correct size pack. If you want expensive lightweight batteries the
clear choice is lithium, especially for a motorcycle. Lugging around
a bunch of lead is still the easiest solution with the lowest up front
costs.

Pondering batteries for the EM conversion and looking at NiMHs. It's a
shame that the bigger sizes are being held off the market, but some
decent D cells seem to be available with tabs. Price isn't too awful.

I looked thru the EV album and it seems NiMH show up in scooters/bikes
and jumps up in size to the cars (Prii, etc) that use unobtainable
cells.
So, what's the take on NiMH for a real street-sized EM ?
