Hi everyone, For those of you bringing EVs to the SunDay Challenge event (www.sundaychallenge.org) and want or need to charge at 208-240V, you should have on the end of your charging cable either a 10-30 plug or a 10-30 plug adaptor so as to be able to plug into a 10-30 receptacle, which will be the standard 208-240V charging interface for the event at both locations, FSEC and FIT. A 10-30 plug is a standard dryer plug with an L-shaped prong on top and two slanted straight prongs on the bottom at 60-degree angles from horizontal (30-degree angles from vertical), and looks like this:
_________ | | | |_ | | | | \ / | |________ | The two slanted straight prongs on the bottom are the two "Hots", and the L-shaped prong on top is the "Ground" (green wire). Your charging cable (you will need to bring your own) should be at least 30 feet in length, and I personally generally recommend 50-feet; and again, to reiterate, you will need to have a plug or plug adaptor to be able to plug your charging cable into a 10-30 receptacle. There will be six 10-30 receptacles available for charging at FSEC, each on its own 30A 208V circuit. There will be five 10-30 receptacles available for charging at Florida Tech, each on its own 30A 208V circuit. There will be plenty (a dozen or more) 15A standard 120V outlets at both FSEC and Florida Tech. On a separate but related issue, that of the road rally on Sunday from FSEC in Cocoa to FIT in Melbourne, a few people have asked me what the exact distance of the course is in an effort to determine whether or not their EV has enough range to make it. First, before attempting to answer that question, here is a map of the full course, which runs down US Route 1 from FSEC in Cocoa to FIT in Melbourne: www.fsec.ucf.edu/en/media/events/sundaychallenge/pdfs/Route-Map.pdf (Be advised that this is a *huge* 15MB file which takes a long time to download and display.) Here is a close-up map of the start of the course at FSEC in Cocoa: www.fsec.ucf.edu/en/media/events/sundaychallenge/pdfs/SC-2007-05.pdf And here is a close-up map of the finish of the course at FIT in Melbourne: www.fsec.ucf.edu/en/media/events/sundaychallenge/pdfs/SC-2007-08.pdf Now, as for answering the question about what the exact distance of the course is, there is a bit of discrepancy between what Bill Young claims here: www.fsec.ucf.edu/en/media/events/sundaychallenge/fact_sheets.htm, where he says that the course is "over 40 miles", and the results I got using Mapquest.com's "Directions" function, by entering the "Starting Location" address of FSEC (1679 Clearlake Road, Cocoa, FL 32922), the "Ending Location" address of FIT (150 W University Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32901), and under "Advanced Options" selecting "Shortest Distance" and "Avoid Highways" so as to force the selection of the route down US Route 1, which is almost the exact route of the road rally, and which returns a total distance of 25 miles. I don't know if Bill has driven the exact route in his car and measured the distance with his trip odometer, but it seems to me that he has likely overestimated the distance of the course by a good 13-15 miles. This is a potentially significant discrepancy because a 27-mile course would allow many more lead-acid EVs to make it with comfortable margin to spare than a 40-mile course would. Hope to see you all there!
