Hi Hugh,

We have unfortunately been having lots of problems with USF, which has
repeatedly declined at least a half dozen requests over the last year for us
to use their solar charging station, apparently over liability concerns; at
least that's what we've been told. They had at one point indicated to one
high-level intermediary, who appealed their denials of our requests, that
they might consider allowing select, pre-screened Florida EAA members with
EVs, who have a need to charge there, to do so under certain terms,
conditions and restrictions, including signing liability and indemnity
waivers and affidavits, but they never followed through on this.

After many such failed attempts, we have pretty much written off USF and
have turned our attention to other charging prospects in the Tampa Bay area,
including some of our Florida EAA members there. Three of our members in
particular -- Cornelius Cronin, Cliff Ruffner, and another one named Ben
(never got his last name) who goes by the moniker "Green VW" -- have very
generously stepped up and answered the call to our requests for 50A/240V
charging there in the Bay area by offering their own charging facilities to
Andrew Roddy and any other visiting members. We have hooked Andrew up with
all three of these members, so he is now well fixed on charging there. (By
the way, this has been previously discussed in prior posts on the FLEAA
discussion list a few weeks ago. Maybe you missed them.)

Having said that, however, I know that you are an alumnus of USF (and in
fact my wife was a medical doctor and researcher on the medical staff at USF
Medical School), so if there is anything that you are able to do to pick up
the ball and continue working on trying to get us permission to use their
solar charging station, we would greatly appreciate anything you are able to
accomplish on that front, or even just your efforts. One angle you might
try would be if you, as an alumnus, make annual contributions to the school,
then you could point that out to the Alumni Office and tell them about the
problems we have been having getting permission to use the school's solar
charging station, and maybe you could sort of subtly (or maybe not so
subtly) link the two, i.e. your continued contributions to the Alumni Fund
on the one hand and them giving us permission to use their solar charging
station on the other. Alumni (of all schools) use such tactics all the
time. Money talks and can get a lot of things done! :-)

Thanks & best regards,

Charles Whalen

Michael:

Thanks for your reply. I don't have the charging spec.s for the EBox
myself; I am cc-ing this to Andrew Roddy, the EV driver concerned, and to
the FL EAA discussion list.

This has been forwarded to me, I hope I can help. What voltage charger
are you looking for? How is it connected?

Madam or Sir:

A friend and fellow electric vehicle (EV) enthusiast will be
driving his electric "EBox" converted Toyota Scion Xb into your area
next month. We Florida Electric Auto Association members are trying to
locate a 50-watt charger that he might be able to use in the Tampa area.

Does the CERC solar EV charging facility accommodate 50W charging?

Thanks for pioneering technology that will soon be needed to charge
highway-capable EVs now coming onto the US market.
