Charles,

I have a Sprint Wireless card I use in my laptop...no webcam but let me look
into getting one and what I might be able to with it.

At a minimum, I will be able to post pictures and details from the track.

Thanks Brian! Let me post this back to the FLEAA list and ask:

Does anyone have a laptop with a Verizon (or other service?) wireless card
and a webcam?

If so, maybe we could use some sort of videoconferencing software with Keith
and the guys in San Diego (who of course would have to be using the same
videoconferencing software). That would be just a one-on-one -- from a
single laptop at Countyline in Miami to a single laptop at Barona in San
Diego, and vice-versa, with another videostream similarly coming back the
other way. Anyone know anything about this and how to do it?

Also, if anyone has this Verizon wireless card for use with a laptop, do you
know what the upstream bandwidth of the Internet connection is (over the
cell phone line)? I would guess we'd probably need at least ~600 Kbps for a
decent video uplink, yes? (... Especially when we're talking about a lot of
fast-motion video.)

Thanks,

Charles Whalen

Hi Charles,

This streaming can most likely be done using Verzion Wireless card(s) in a
laptop and a Webcam. I have done it on a one on one but as far as
broadcasting it to a bunch of people live - that might take a little more
"doing".

Hi all,

I'm passing along a question that I was asked by Keith Vansickle, principal
organizer of Electric Dragin' EV drag race & autocross competition in San
Diego, being held the same weekend as our BBB. Unfortunately I'm somewhat
of a technology-challenged techno-troglodyte, still trying to figure out how
to get into the 21st century, so I'm hoping that some of you more tech-savvy
types might be able to figure out if this is possible and know how to do it.

The guys in San Diego are wondering if we might be able to stream a live
video feed from BBB to them at Electric Dragin there in San Diego via the
Internet. Keith's first question is whether there is Internet connectivity
at Countyline Dragstrip in Miami. Given that Countyline is way out in
boonies, out in the middle of a swamp back in the Everglades, I'm pretty
sure there aren't any wireless Internet "hotspots" anywhere near there. No
Starbucks out there. :-) Also, I know that in its former incarnation, until
recently, Opa Locka West was an unattended airstrip with no FBO and no
facilities.

So that leaves Keith's second question, as another alternative -- whether
anyone has an Internet-capable wireless phone that can be used to connect to
the Internet via cell phone lines/towers. (I'm pretty sure there's cell
phone coverage back there.) So could someone hook up a digital videocamera
to his Internet-capable cell phone and upload a live video feed, via cell
phone lines, over the Internet to the guys in San Diego? ... Anyone know?

[FWIW, I asked a gadget-freak friend of mine in Miami who has one of those
iPhone thingies, and he told me that yes, he can get Internet connectivity
on his iPhone anywhere he goes, via cell phone lines, but he said that he
thinks the upstream bandwidth is too small and limited to do any sort of
live videostream uplink.]

Finally, the last question that Keith asked is if we have the layout of the
autocross route, length, number of right turns, left turns, etc., as they
would like to set up their autocross course to match ours as closely as
possible. ... Anyone? ... Shawn, Cliff, Lowell?

Thanks & Happy New Year,
