My competition team, my wife and myself traveled to Raleigh NC last week
to compete in the SMARTT Challenge (Students Making Advancements in
Renewable Transportation Technologies). We competed against schools from
5 states from Virginia to Iowa with several new vehicles such as a Mazda
Miata, MX3, Fiero, a Toyota Paseo, Nissans, numerous trucks and returning
cars. We took our Porsche 944 and a group of 6 students. The students
worked hard and the car ran flawlessly during the competition. Students
had to show their expertise in our vehicle design, drive the vehicle over
the city streets of Raleigh at highway speeds and compete in an autocross
competition. We brought home 4 trophies from the competition. A 5 member
juding team from Duke University awarded my students 1st place our vehicle
design and their knowledge of it, one student drove the vehilce 45 miles
to a 3rd place finish behind 2 lightweight vehicles with flooded
batteries, another student finished 2nd in the autocross competition only
.3 of a second to the much smaller Mazda Miata with our controller turned
down to 1200 amps, and our recently updated website received a 3rd place
award. This has been a very successful year and looking forward to a new
group of students come August when we start all over again.
