Hi Peter, I have seen this before and the way i got around it was to create a new application pool in IIS and to ensure that the service accounts I am using in central admin,SSP , site collections are correct. I had to create a new account and re-assign the services to use the newly created account and the problem went away. It worked for me and it might solve your problem.
