I've had a chat with Dustin, who runs SharepointExperts/sharepointu/sharepointblogs/icantbelieveitsnotsharepoint, and things have been cleared up.
-By signing up for any of the above you agree to be contacted ~10 times per year by their own internal promotions (no external party had access to the list) -The TOS states this -Unfortunatly the TOS was not re-uploaded (nor the link/notice on the signup page) after their big crash earlier this year, so people signing up AFTER this never got notified that they were also signing up to these promotions. I'm happy with that explanation.
