Thanks for that - will give it a try if I can ever get back onto the VM.
I've not got access to the host box, only the VM. I did a dns flush on that but didn't check MACs or do an ipconfig /renew - just gave it the virtual big red finger in frustration. The VM has the correct new name, but not sure how support set it. Before the failed reboot, I could connect to everything locally, apart from sharepoint - browsed the embedded SQL, connected to other localhost sites, checked the machine events and running services... Given RDP died after at the reboot I think you are onto something though. As it was my first week in the job I presumed support had copied and run up sharepoint virtual images for newbies before, so didn't expect an issue. Impressed by all the help and feedback guys! Don't waste too effort on it though as I'm putting this on a back-burner and going to plan 2 now - stealing someone else's box. This means you'll have problems connecting to the server in some way (although you'll usually see a message at some point about this!). Removing the virtual network adapter will re-allocate a MAC address in case this is a problem. Also, if the machines IP is fixed, change it, if it's dynamic run ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew. And, in case DNS is an issue meaning you can ping the ip, but not rdp via netbios or FQDN, run ipconfig /flushdns (on the host and vpc!). - The machine id's are conflicting with the original, which means you need to sysprep and rename the box. In theory MOSS should be ok with this providing you run stsadm -o renameserver. Seeing as I have not done this for a while I can't speak as to the fact that SQL will survive this process, but seeing as it's pretty wrecked at the moment what have you got to lose ;-) Hope that helps, assuming you haven't trashed it already! Are you using a Microsoft VM image (vmc/vmd) or VMware? Are all your servers (SQL & MOSS) in the image? If not, you probably won't easily connect to a required server not in the image. If they are, you may want to check what network cards the VM thinks it has, since moving it from one host to another might change these settings if actual (physical) network cards were being used. If that's all fine consider checking your IIS settings for name resolution issues. If the image is incomplete or unusable you might choose to create a new VM that has all the necessary servers, then ask for a backup from the original configuration and restore that into your VM. This works as easily for VMs as it does for actual deployments. As long as your VM has a minimal load (not too many users at once) and enough RAM it can make a great dev platform. In addition you can put it on a server that gets backed up every night (to take away your worries) you can either remote into it or just go in through your browser and use your local copy of SharePoint Designer. Are there any tricks to get this working? Running Central Admin points to the original boxes hostname and fails, and running the config wizard dies with db connection errors. Accessing the sites also give DB connection errors. It looks as if it is trying to connect to the remote box's DBs (no connection string info in the logs unfortunately), or doesn't have permissions for connections to my Virtual Server's DBs. I haven't found any info on the web, so this doesn't seem this is the normal way of doing things - so I might be re-installing?
